The teaching of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) will enable pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly carried out in languages other than English. Pupils use languages to communicate information responsibly, creatively and with discrimination.

It will provide them with the necessary skills to learn how to employ languages to enable rapid access to ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and cultures. Increased capability in the use of languages promotes initiative and independent learning and encourages diversity within society.

The curriculum  provides relevant and challenging learning to all children. It follows the three principles set out in the inclusion statement:

A. setting suitable learning challenges

B. responding to pupils’ diverse learning needs

C. overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils.

 

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

At Fairhaven we use the French language to fulfil these aims in Key Stage 2. We are very fortunate to have a teacher from Summer Hill come weekly to teach our children. Madame Harris will visit each Key Stage 2 class at least twice each half term. Both children and Fairhaven staff benefit greatly from her expertise and knowledge.
